The HoHoKus-Hackensack School of Business and Medical Sciences, formerly known as The American Business Academy, began in March of 1969. Under the direction of Ann Takvorian, Certified Shorthand Reporter, the school was dedicated to preparing selected secondary school and college graduates with a thorough background in Court Reporting and Secretarial skills. The school grew rapidly, its size and scope increasing with time.
The curriculum was expanded with the addition of a Medical Assisting Program in September 1978 and Medical Billing/Coding and Medical Assistant/Pharmacy Technician were added to our Medical Division. Our Business Division was expanded to include: Business Administration w/Computerized Accounting/Bookkeeping, Administrative Assistant, Executive Assistant, Legal Assistant, and Computer Concepts and Application programs.
The HoHoKus Hackensack School building has been totally renovated, Offering tastefully decorated surroundings that provide a pleasant learning environment. The HoHoKus-Hackensack School is located in Bergen County, just 12 miles northwest of New York City, and is easily accessible to all major highways, and offers near by parking. Hackensack is easily accessible by bus lines and is located just 11⁄2 blocks from the Hackensack bus terminal.
The HoHoKus-Hackensack School offers the most modern equipment available today. Classrooms are air-conditioned, and a comfortable lounge and dining area are provided. Two complete computer laboratories of Pentium processor computers ensure each student a workstation for ample hands-on experience. Each student will gain the experience necessary to obtain Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications in: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Machine Transcription machines are provided to familiarize students with current office procedures.
The fully equipped medical laboratory is a duplicate of a physician's examination room. Four privately screened areas are used in correlation with Medical Assisting, EKG, and patient care training. Clinical training includes hands-on practice with diagnostic equipment such as: Reflotron, Centrifuge, Hemacue, Uricult, Autoclave, QBC, EKG, and Prostheses.
Medical laboratory practice includes: vital signs, routine urinalysis, venipuncture, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and certifying students in the procedures of EKG, CPR (Adult, Infant & Child), Safety & First Aid, Uricult, Reflotron, QBC, and OSHA. Upon completion of the Medical Assistant/Pharmacy Technician program, students are eligible to sit for the following certification exams: Registered Medical Assistant, National Certified Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Medical Assistant, and Certified Pharmacy Technician. Upon completion of the Medical Billing/Coding Specialist program, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Billing & Coding Specialist exam.
The HoHoKus Hackensack School is equipped with an elevator and is accessible to students with disabilities.
Every effort made to assist handicapped students with convenient parking and seat assignments. The HoHoKus-Hackensack School is a commuting school. There is no boarding at the school.

Upon completion of their program, Medical Assisting students are eligible to sit for the following exams: RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) sponsored by AMT (American Medical Technologists), and Certified Phlebotomist through NCPT (National Center for Phlebotomy Technicians). The HoHoKus-Hackensack School of Business and Medical Sciences is accredited by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools. Students have the ability to transfer a portion of credits to over 1,500 two- and four-year colleges with the recommendation of the American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE/CCRS), who determined that our courses are equivalent to or similar to those taught at the college level.
